It keeps watch over medicines and devices, and take necessary action to protect the public promptly if there is a problem.<\/p>\n<p>The MHRA runs the <a href=\"https:\/\/yellowcard.mhra.gov.uk\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Yellow Card scheme<\/a>, which collects and monitors information on suspected safety concerns involving a healthcare products, like a side effect with a medicine or a medical device concern. The scheme relies on voluntary reporting of problems to a healthcare product by the public (including patients, parents and carer givers) as well as from healthcare professionals. The scheme also collects suspected safety concerns involving defective (not of an acceptable quality), falsified or fake healthcare products.<\/p>\n<p>Anyone &#8211; patients and clinicians &#8211; can report side effects and problems. Reporting suspected adverse effects to medicines as soon as they happen helps improve safety for future patients.<\/p>\n<h2>Wasted or unused medicine<\/h2>\n<p>Wasted or unused medicine is a serious and growing problem within the NHS that you can help tackle.<\/p>\n<p>Medicines that are requested on prescriptions but then not used are sometimes referred to as Medicines Waste. Nationally, for every \u00a325 spent on prescription medication, \u00a31 is wasted &#8211; and the same is true across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.<\/p>\n<p>It is estimated that across the area, \u00a38 million is spent on unused medication every year and \u00a3300 million is spent nationally.<\/p>\n<p>The NHS pays for every medicine it dispenses and if it is not needed by the patient the NHS also pays for the medicines to be disposed of.<\/p>\n<p>By talking and listening to the local community, GPs, pharmacies and other healthcare professionals it\u2019s clear how important it is that we tackle the issue of medicine waste, particularly at a time when locally and nationally the NHS system is facing major challenges to meet the demand for services within available resources.<\/p>\n<h2>We need your help<\/h2>\n<p>Reducing medicines waste is a key focus for us at Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board (ICB) but it is not something we can do alone.<\/p>\n<p>We need your help to work together to stop medicines waste across the area, reduce the spend, and get more from your local NHS.<\/p>\n<p>We want to raise awareness amongst the public and need to get residents in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>check what you already have at home before you order more<\/li>\n<li>tell your doctor if you stop taking your medication<\/li>\n<li>speak to your pharmacist if you are receiving medicines you don\u2019t use<\/li>\n<li>whilst in the pharmacy collecting your prescription, check you\u2019ve received the required medication.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Finding advice on medications<\/h2>\n<p>We want you to get the best from your medicines so, if you need advice on any aspect of your medication, please speak to your local pharmacist.<\/p>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/service-search\/pharmacy\/find-a-pharmacy\/\" class=\"btn-link flex w-[fit-content] \" rel=\"noopener\">Find your nearest pharmacy<\/a>\n\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/\" class=\"btn-link flex w-[fit-content] \" rel=\"noopener\">Conditions A-Z <\/a>\n\n<h2>Why it\u2019s important to keep your GP informed<\/h2>\n<p>If your GP prescribes medication to treat a condition, it\u2019s important to take it in exactly the way that it\u2019s been prescribed to receive the most benefit.<\/p>\n<p>If you stop taking your medication \u2013 or if you stop taking it in the way your doctor prescribed \u2013 please make an appointment to talk to your doctor about this. They\u2019ll help you to make an informed choice about your medication and may be able to prescribe an alternative.<\/p>\n<p>Please don\u2019t be afraid to tell them that you\u2019ve stopped following their prescription \u2013 it\u2019s much better that they know.<\/p>\n<h2>The role of the Medicines Optimisation team<\/h2>\n<p>Our Medicines Optimisation team supports GPs, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to prescribe the most appropriate, cost-effective and safe medicines, and to share easy-to-understand information about these medications with their patients.<\/p>\n  <\/div>\r\n  <\/section><\/div><!-- .assembler_text-module.assembler_module.assembler_text-module_1.assembler_module_1..transparent --><\/div><!-- .assembler_module_area.assembler_module_area_1 --><\/div><!-- .assembler_default-group.assembler_module_group.assembler_default-group_1.assembler_module_group_1  -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Section titled module-1 You and your medicines Reporting side effects The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)\u00a0 ensures that healthcare products meet appropriate standards of safety, quality and efficacy.
