If you\u2019re over 35, or if you think either you or your partner may have a fertility problem, see your GP after six months of trying. Your GP may refer you to a fertility clinic for tests and treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Visit the NHS website to find out more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/infertility\/diagnosis\/\" rel=\"noopener\">diagnosis of infertility<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Your GP will be able to tell you whether you\u2019re eligible for treatment on the NHS.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re under 35 or you\u2019ve been trying for less than a year, learn how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/pregnancy-and-baby\/planning-pregnancy\/\" rel=\"noopener\">improve your chances of conceiving and having a successful pregnancy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Smoking and pregnancy<\/h2>\n<p>Smoking can reduce your chances of getting pregnant and can harm your unborn child.<\/p>\n      <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/live-well\/quit-smoking\/nhs-stop-smoking-services-help-you-quit\/\" class=\"btn-link flex w-[fit-content] \" rel=\"noopener\">Get advice and support on giving up smoking<\/a>\n\n<h2>What to do when you have a positive pregnancy test<\/h2>\n<p>Once you have a confirmed pregnancy, contact your local community midwifery team for advice and support. Your GP surgery can give you further details. If you have a pre-existing physical or mental health condition you should let your GP know that you are pregnant.<\/p>\n<p>You can also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/InformationServiceForParents\/pages\/signup.aspx\" rel=\"noopener\">sign up for pregnancy emails and texts<\/a> containing step-by-step advice tailored to your stage in pregnancy from the NHS Information Service for Parents.<\/p>\n<h2>Where to have your baby<\/h2>\n<p>There are a number of choices for places to have your baby in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, and you can discuss these with your midwife or obstetrician. You can change your mind about where to have your baby at any time during your pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>Local choices include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>home birth<\/li>\n<li>midwife-led birth centres providing a comfortable environment with birth pools at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbt.nhs.uk\/maternity-services\/labour-birth\/cossham-birth-centre\" rel=\"noopener\">Cossham Hospital<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbt.nhs.uk\/maternity-services\" rel=\"noopener\">Southmead Hospital<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uhbristol.nhs.uk\/patients-and-visitors\/your-hospitals\/st-michaels-hospital\/our-wards\/st-michael&#039;s-midwifery-led-birthing-unit\/\" rel=\"noopener\">St Michael\u2019s Hospital<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.waht.nhs.uk\/en-GB\/Our-Services1\/Hospital-Units\/Ashcombe-Birth-Centre\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashcombe Birth Centre (Weston General Hospital)<\/a><\/li>\n<li>obstetric units at St Michael\u2019s Hospital and Southmead Hospital \u2013 these are advised if you have a medical condition or have had a previous complicated pregnancy, or if a complication arises during your pregnancy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For more information on options for giving birth visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/pregnancy-and-baby\/where-can-i-give-birth\/#choosing-your-birth-location\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Breastfeeding<\/h2>\n<p>All Bristol maternity, health visitor and peer support staff, as well as many children\u2019s centre workers, are trained to support mothers with best practices for breast and bottle-feeding.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, including national breastfeeding helplines, breastfeeding-friendly caf\u00e9s and other facilities, go to your local council website.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bristol.gov.uk\/social-care-health\/breastfeeding-in-bristol\" rel=\"noopener\">Breastfeeding in Bristol &#8211; Bristol City Council<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/nsod.n-somerset.gov.uk\/kb5\/northsomerset\/directory\/service.page?id=0ZAnT-vUP-I\" rel=\"noopener\">Breastfeeding &#8211; North Somerset Council<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/find-information-for-adults-children-families.southglos.gov.uk\/kb5\/southglos\/directory\/advice.page?id=lD3UAnOT-O4&amp;familychannel=1-5&amp;channel=family#:~:text=We%20offer%20a%20free%20service,or%20challenges%20you%20might%20have.\" rel=\"noopener\">Infant Feeding &#8211; South Gloucestershire Council<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some information is available in several languages by arrangement, plus telephone advice in Bengali and Sylheti.<\/p>\n<h2>Anxiety and depression during and after pregnancy<\/h2>\n<p>\u2018Baby blues\u2019 are very common, and include feeling tired and weepy for a few days after the birth.<\/p>\n<p>However, between 10 and 20 per cent of women will experience more serious and persistent physical or emotional symptoms during or after their pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p>For help and support, please contact your GP who can refer you to NHS Talking Therapies Service. They will arrange an assessment, and prepare a plan that could include guided self-help and talking therapies.
