Every young person is unique, but whatever support they need there is a range of organisations that can help.<\/p>\n<p>In Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire we have a \u2018needs-led\u2019 approach to supporting young people including those who may be neurodivergent. If, having completed the needs-led approach, a formal clinical diagnosis is necessary to help a young person access further specialist support, this can be provided.<\/p>\n<p>Benefits of the needs-led approach include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Early understanding and support for a young person\u2019s needs, without having to wait for a formal diagnostic assessment first.<\/li>\n<li>Support is tailored to a young person&#8217;s unique challenges and needs, rather than being focused on a specific condition or diagnostic \u2018label\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>Professionals from health, education and social care, work with families to develop practical support plans which can evolve with the young person.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Support is provided in four areas.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Information and advice\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>There is a wide range of information and advice that\u2019s freely available to help young people and their families understand possible signs of neurodivergence, consider their needs and explore practical steps and resources that might help. Use this website to explore the range of help and support available from organisations in the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire area.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Support in schools and other settings\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If more support is needed, schools and GPs can help identify education, health and care services that can help. They can also help you to access training on how to support your young person. To find out more, speak to your school Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) or GP.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Targeted support\u00a0 <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>If existing help and support don\u2019t fully meet the young person\u2019s needs, professionals will work with you to develop a deeper understanding of their strengths and challenges and prepare a personalised support plan.<\/p>\n<p>To support this, a Neurodiversity Needs Analysis (NNA) is carried out in schools and other settings. The NNA is a structured discussion between professionals, families and young people which is used to generate an early understanding of their strengths, differences and areas of need, and identify helpful strategies.
