Integrated Care Partnerships (ICPs)

Integrated care partnerships (ICPs) are formal partnerships of provider organisations working together to deliver care by collaborating rather than competing. They include hospitals, community services, councils, mental health services and GP services. Social care and voluntary sector providers may also be involved.

Integrated Care Partnerships by area

It has been agreed that there will be six ICPs across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG). The areas are:

  • Bristol: Inner City & East
  • Bristol: North & West
  • Bristol: South
  • North Somerset: Weston & Worle
  • North Somerset: Woodspring
  • South Gloucestershire

Delivering more care in the community

ICPs are a fundamental change to how health and care services are delivered in the future.

They will focus on delivering coordinated services at ‘place’ level. This will mean that the community will become the usual place of care for the majority of people’s needs – hospitals will only be used when required for highly specialist or emergency support.

While ICPs will be unique, they will all have to meet the same quality standards and a shared common purpose;  to improve the health and care of the people they serve, integrate services for the benefit of the local population and reduce health inequalities.

‘Integration’ means coordinating services around people’s needs, and making it easy for them to get the range of support they require.

In the background, it may involve lots of different organisations working together, but for the person using a health and care service it should feel like a joined-up and continuous care experience.

In parallel to our efforts to create ICPs a lot of work has been undertaken to understand people’s current experiences of community mental health services. This is particularly important given the likely impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. With this in mind, improvements to community mental health services will be one of the first areas of work that the ICPs will be asked to focus on.

We don’t have all the answers yet…

There is no fixed view on how an ICP should operate. This is something that is best worked out together and we expect there will be lots of conversations over the coming months to help determine this.

We will continue to add to this website page as further information becomes available.
