Reducing your risk of trips and falls

Falls are not inevitable in later life. If you have fallen or are starting to feel unsteady, it is important to have an assessment. A lot can be done to reduce your risk of falling again.

Ask your GP or health professional for a multi-factorial falls risk assessment (MFRA).

Stay active

The most important step you can take is to stay active and do activities that improve your strength and balance every day.

Sirona’s Start Today Exercise Programme is a seated exercise programme designed for people at risk of falls.

How to make your home safer

Simple changes around your home can make it a safer place. For example, moving rugs and mats at the top or the bottom of the stairs out of the way, installing a night light near the bed to make sure you can see where you’re going if you wake up in the night, and removing trip hazards like trailing wires or clutter from your home.

Find more information about how to make your home safer and more comfortable on the Age UK website.

If you think you could benefit from adaptations to your home, get in touch with the adult social services department of your local council. They can give you more information about your options and may offer you a free care needs assessment.
