Hundreds of thousands vaccinated as NHS calls on more people to book their winter jabs
Local health teams have vaccinated more than 200,000 people against flu and more than 60,000 people against COVID-19 this winter, but are urging eligible people to book their vaccination appointments for the best protection.
Around 40% of eligible people have received their free flu vaccination, but 314,000 people across the area have not yet had it.
Around 50% of eligible people have received their COVID-19 vaccine, but 60,000 people across the area have not yet had it.
In addition, 67% of people with long-term health conditions have yet not had their their flu vaccination and 75% of people who are immunosuppressed have not yet had their COVID-19 vaccination, leaving them at risk of serious illness from the virus.
Dr Geeta Iyer, Bristol GP and Place Clinical Director at NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB, said:
“We’re really pleased that so many people have already come forward for their winter vaccinations, getting valuable protection but we’re calling on more eligible people to come forward and take up the offer as soon as possible.
“Vaccination helps reduce your risk of serious illness and needing hospital treatment. Even if you’ve been vaccinated before, it’s important to top up your protection when you’re eligible, as protection fades over time.
“Please book as soon as you can. You can check your eligibility and book through the NHS website or NHS App or call 119 free of charge if you cannot book online.”
In particular, parents and carers of two and three-year-olds are being urged to book their child’s free flu vaccination now to help protect them this winter. Around 60% of two to three-year-old children have not yet had their flu vaccination.

The children’s flu vaccine is usually given as a quick, painless nasal spray. If your child hasn’t had theirs yet, please contact the NHS to book an appointment and help protect them this winter.”
A flu vaccine injection is available that does not contain gelatine. If you do not want your child to have the nasal spray vaccine, speak to the person vaccinating your child.
