About the ICB research team<\/h1>\n

Since 2013, the NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB research team has been the highest-ranking ICB<\/a> in England for\u00a0Research Capability Funding. <\/a>Currently, we are ranked amongst the top two of all NHS organisations.<\/p>\n

Each year, we support more than 60 individuals to develop new research grant funding applications, including academics, commissioners, GPs, local authorities, and other care staff.<\/p>\n

Most of the research we support is designed with health and care commissioners. This helps us ensure the research we support directly aligns with ICB or national priorities.<\/span><\/p>\n

We host and support around 55 research grants funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), with a total value of more than \u00a350 million.<\/p>\n Read our Research Annual Report 2025<\/a>\n\n Our Research Strategy 2025 to 2028<\/a>\n\n <\/div>\r\n <\/section><\/div>

What the research team does<\/h2>\n

Grant applications for research funding<\/h3>\n

The research team can act as the host (contracting organisation) for National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) grant applications. Our team supports research costing, including SoECAT completion and authorisation<\/a>. To help build a strong grant application, the team can connect applicants with academics, health and care professionals, Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprises (VCSEs), and other system partners.<\/p>\n

By naming NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB as host, we can generate Research Capability Funding (RCF)<\/a>, which we use to invest in local research development.<\/p>\n

Grant management<\/h3>\n

When National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) grant applications are successful, and NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire<\/span> ICB acts as the host organisation, we manage the full contracting process. This includes signing and holding the research contract with the funder (the Department of Health and Social Care) and establishing collaboration agreements with partner organisations.<\/p>\n

We oversee the project\u2019s contractual and financial management, ensure timely and accurate reporting, and make sure all legal, financial and intellectual property responsibilities are effectively managed throughout the life of the project. Delivery support<\/h3>\n

We facilitate the setup and governance of research across a wide range of health and care settings in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, including primary care, community care, social care, care homes, hospices, community pharmacies, public health, schools, and voluntary sector organisations.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our aim is to ensure that research is set up efficiently and fully supported across these settings. We also\u00a0assist\u00a0researchers with\u00a0<\/span>Integrated Research Application System (IRAS)<\/a>\u00a0applications\u00a0and help them\u00a0access research sites\u00a0by\u00a0issuing\u00a0<\/span>Letters of Access.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dissemination<\/h3>\n

We host a series of seminars on a range of different health and care topic areas, enabling researchers supported by NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB to showcase their work to academics, health and care professionals, commissioners, community groups, and wider system partners.<\/p>\n

We also hold and attend events, highlighting the great work being supported by and delivered in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.<\/p>\n

Impact<\/h3>\n

NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB hosts the Impact Accelerator Unit (IAU)<\/a>, a collaboration between the University of Bristol, UWE Bristol and the NHS. The IAU uses evidence-informed approaches to knowledge mobilisation to increase the likelihood of getting evidence into practice in a way that generates long-lasting and meaningful change.<\/p>\n

IAU supported\u00a0projects\u00a0benefit\u00a0from access to experienced knowledge brokers, insights from evidence users and opportunities to present work to health and care system groups.<\/p>\n Impact case studies<\/a>\n\n

Research Engagement Network<\/h3>\n

We support the co-development of research with under-served communities through the\u202fResearch Engagement Network\u00a0(REN)<\/a>. Our diverse REN has been set up to improve the inclusion of under-served, racially-minoritised communities in research.\u200b<\/p>\n

The REN is led by grassroots community partners\u00a0Caafi\u00a0Health<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Nilaari<\/a>, supported by\u00a0People in Health West of England<\/a>, and funded by NHS England. The network connects people researching and working in health and care with voluntary and community organisations, and public contributors.<\/p>\n <\/div>\r\n <\/section><\/div>

Meet the team<\/h2>\n

Below are the members of the NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB research team. We’ve highlighted some of the areas each team member focuses on, though we can help with any of the areas listed.<\/p>\n

Paul Roy – Associate Director for Research<\/h4>\n

Paul heads up the team, and his main area is oversight of the portfolio and strategy for growing research activity and increasing evidence use across the Integrated Care System.<\/p>\n

Kat Bagi – Research Portfolio Manager<\/h4>\n

Kat is our Research Portfolio Manager. Her area of focus is research finance and information governance.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Rebecca Howling – Research Portfolio Officer<\/h4>\n

Becky works in<\/span>\u00a0the team as a Research\u00a0<\/span>P<\/span>ortfolio\u00a0<\/span>O<\/span>fficer.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Her role is to support researchers in applying to NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> and NIHR funding opportunities. Additionally, she <\/span>assists<\/span> with grant management across the ICB research portfolio.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Alison Diaper – Senior Research Fellow<\/h4>\n

Alison has a dual role with NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span> and the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol). Her role is to support UWE Bristol researchers in applying to ICB and NIHR funding opportunities.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tanzeela Khalid \u2013 Research Portfolio Officer<\/h4>\n

Tanzeela is a Research Portfolio Officer within the team. Her role is to support researchers in applying to NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB<\/span><\/span> and NIHR funding opportunities. Additionally, she <\/span>assists<\/span> with grant management across the ICB research portfolio.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Emily Brush – Research Portfolio Officer<\/h4>\n

Emily is<\/span>\u00a0a Research\u00a0<\/span>P<\/span>ortfolio\u00a0<\/span>O<\/span>fficer<\/span>\u00a0in the team<\/span>. Her role is to support researchers\u00a0<\/span>in applying to NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB<\/span><\/span> and NIHR funding opportunities. Additionally, she <\/span>assists<\/span> with grant management across the ICB research portfolio.<\/span><\/p>\n

Carrie White \u2013 Impact Accelerator Unit Manager<\/h4>\n

Carrie leads the NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB Impact Accelerator Unit. Her main focus is the implementation of research into service.<\/p>\n

Rachel Avery – Research Delivery Officer<\/h4>\n

Rachel is our Research\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Delivery<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Officer. She can help with setting up a study for recruitment.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ros Hussey- Research\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Delivery<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Support<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n

Ros is Research\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Delivery<\/span><\/span> Support. She can help with Letters of Access and the review of studies opening in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Joolz Clements – Research Finance Support<\/h4>\n

Joolz<\/span>\u00a0is Research Finance Support. She can help with invoices and PPI payments.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Matt Freeman – Research Portfolio Support<\/h4>\n
