Local health and care services shortlisted for national HSJ Awards
Health and care services in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) have been shortlisted in this year’s national HSJ Awards for their commitment to healthcare excellence.
The awards, which take place annually, are a chance to recognise the outstanding contribution local projects and initiatives have made to healthcare and the experiences of local people. This year the judges have recognised seven local initiatives and services across a range of award categories.
The stoma prescribing model has been shortlisted for the Medicines, Pharmacy and Prescribing Initiative of the Year Award.
Developed in partnership with BNSSG ICB and Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, the model has transformed stoma prescribing so that it is delivered across the area by specialist Stoma Nurses. This has enabled more consistent, higher-quality care for stoma patients, promoting earlier clinical intervention and reducing stoma-related hospital attendances.
North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT), which is now part of Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, has been shortlisted for Trust of the Year, for the dedication, innovation and compassion of colleagues across the organisation. South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) has also been shortlisted in the same category for the significant improvements it has made for patients, colleagues, and communities across the South West.
The John Green Campaign for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month has been shortlisted for the NHS Communications Initiative of the Year Award.
A collaboration between Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, Somerset, Wiltshire, Avon and Gloucestershire (SWAG) Cancer Alliance, Bristol Rovers Football Club and Bristol Rovers Community Trust, the campaign aimed to raise awareness of prostate cancer risk among male football supporters by encouraging early detection and connecting the community to local resources.
The Robotic Process Automation tool, used in NHS recruitment processes at Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, has been shortlisted for the Driving Efficiency Through Technology Award. The innovative approach has streamlined processes, reduced administrative burden and enabled recruiters to focus on supporting people throughout the recruitment journey.
The Timely Handover Process (THP) has been shortlisted for Provider Collaboration of the Year. Developed in partnership with SWASFT, NHS England and local hospitals and Integrated Care Boards across the South West, the initiative introduced a shared, region-wide approach to improving ambulance handovers and patient flow, helping reduce average handover times.
SWASFT’s Staying Well Hub has been shortlisted for the Staff Wellbeing and Culture Award for its work to better support colleagues working in a high-pressure, trauma-exposed environment. The Hub brings together prevention, early intervention, and specialist care within a single, accessible service.

The shortlisted entries will now be reviewed before the winners are announced at the national HSJ Awards Ceremony on 19 November in London.
