Summer Wake Up Call with BBC Radio Bristol
In May and June local NHS organisations teamed up with BBC Radio Bristol to put on a Summer Wake Up Call Roadshow focused on all things health and included the opportunity for a free health checks from the Bristol Hospital Group health check team.
Joe Sims and the BBC Radio Bristol team toured across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire hosting roadshows at The Hub in Lockleaze, Yate Leisure Centre, Hartcliffe and Withywood Community Partnership, and the For All Healthy Living Centre in Weston-super-Mare covering topics such as breast cancer, bowel cancer, heart health, dementia and more.

Joe Sims spoke with local GP, Dr Marion Steiner from Horfield Health Centre, about what happens when people visit their GP with concerns about dementia, the importance of coming forward early, and the support available from local dementia wellbeing teams.

This week’s show focused on ‘heart’ health topics, including blood pressure and cholesterol. Joe Sims spoke with local community pharmacist, Adele Littleton, about the importance of knowing your blood pressure numbers and how community pharmacy can help.
This week’s show focused on breast cancer, hearing from people who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and how they dealt with it and providing an overview of breast cancer screening, including who is eligible and why.
This week’s show focused on prostate and bowel cancer, hearing from people who had been diagnosed with each and how they encourage people to take up screening invites. The show also featured an interview with local GP and Clinical Lead for Horizon Health Centre, Dr Andrew Cummings, talking all about the community feel of the For All Healthy Living Centre and how it helps the GP practice’s connection with the area.
