Why it’s important

We know the environment has a major impact on our everyday health, from air quality to reducing carbon emissions. In 2022, we launched our three-year Green Plan that will support our ambitions to become net zero while continuing to effectively support the health needs of our population.

What we can do

To achieve this, we are working with our partners, staff and local people to develop a BNSSG-wide movement. This is focused on our behaviours, actions and innovations that will result in improvements to our air quality, biodiversity and the overall environment across our health and care estates.

Our core ambition is to achieve net zero carbon across all health and care emissions by 2030.

How we’ll measure progress

  • Achieving net zero carbon across all health and care emissions by 2030.
  • 60% of all waste to be re-used or recycled by March 2026, 80% by 2028 and 100% by 2030.
  • Improve air quality across all of our estates in 2024.
  • Ensure all suppliers share our net zero emissions by reducing their own carbon emissions by 2030.
  • Install electric vehicle charging infrastructure by spring 2025.

Outcomes framework – We use a system outcomes framework to measure our progress. Each outcome has linked indicators designed to monitor our progress and link it back to our strategic objectives.

Strategic commitments – These are the nine commitments we made in our Integrated Care System Strategy to transform our services.
