GP practice in Thornbury set for expansion
St Mary Street GP practice in Thornbury is set to expand thanks to £250k in funding from NHS England’s Primacy Care Utilisation and Modernisation Fund.
The funding is being used to create extra patient consultation space by utilising a vacant commercial unit next door to the practice. From this, an additional three patient consultation rooms will be provided.
David Jarrett, Chief Delivery Officer at NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB, said:
“This investment supports our ambition to improve access to general practice and make best use of existing NHS facilities. By delivering three additional clinical rooms, in an already vacant space, we are creating extra capacity for patients and help ensure services are delivered in the right place, at the right time.”
Emma Williams, Strategic Practice Manager at St Mary Street Surgery, said:
“We’re really pleased to be utilising this funding to create much-needed extra capacity for our patients. By expanding and modernising our premises, we’ll be able to use our space more effectively, improve accessibility and support our teams to see more patients in a safe and comfortable environment.
“We aim to keep disruption to a minimum during the construction phase. Patients can continue to access services as normal.”
Following the completion of legal and contractual processes, construction works are set to begin in the coming weeks with the aim of completing works by May 2026.
NHS England created the Primary Care Utilisation and Modernisation Fund to create additional clinical capacity within existing buildings to enable additional appointments.
NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB has managed the submission of bids for NHS England’s Utilisation and Modernisation Funding, focusing on projects that aligned with local priorities and capacity needs. The ICB has supported the St Mary Street Surgery through the planning, legal and construction processes, to help ensure the scheme can be delivered effectively.
