Research and development functions
Partners have different Research and Development functions that support research including:

Academic partners and support
There are various academic collaborations, teams and researchers working on health and social care issues.
- Bristol Health Partners, including their Health Integration Teams gather and use evidence to improve the health of people in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire by connecting researchers with the needs and ambitions of communities, the health service, social care, public health and the voluntary sector.
- Health Innovation West of England collaborates with local health and care systems and academic, industry and VCSE partners to discover, develop and deploy proven innovation, driving better and fairer health outcomes for our communities.
- NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) West, which conducts applied health research with partners and others in the health and care sector, alongside patients and members of the public.
- The Impact Accelerator Unit (IAU) a collaboration between Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board (ICB), University of Bristol and UWE Bristol. IAUs are services dedicated to championing and disseminating evidence.
- Various UWE Research centres and groups, such as the Centre for Health and Clinical Research and the Centre for Public Health and Wellbeing.
- Various UoB schools and centres such as, Bristol Biomedical Research Centre, Elizabeth Blackwell Institute and Centre for Academic Primary Care (CAPC), a leading centre for primary care research and teaching in the UK, part of Bristol Medical School, and one of nine centres that form the NIHR School for Primary Care Research.
- GW4, an alliance of four universities: Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter. Health and Wellbeing is one of their strategic priorities.

Toolkits and training
- Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board has developed surveys, evidence and evaluation resources, templates and toolkits email bnssg.research@nhs.net for information.
- Evaluation Works and Evidence Works toolkits have been developed to facilitate the creation and use of evidence in decision making for new and existing services and products.
- NIHR ARC West training course and self-led online learning.
- Toolkits and resources from Health Innovation West of England
- Centre for Academic Primary Care (CAPC) resources and tools.

Repositories
- The Engagement Log is a library of Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (Market Research or Opinion Research) across BNSSG. It coordinates research and healthcare engagement, connecting teams to similar projects, sharing insights, and fostering community relationships by acknowledging past engagements. - Evidence Repository (coordinated by West of England Health Innovation Network) – uses the national portal Future NHS to safely sharing non-peer reviewed documents that are not published elsewhere to promote a culture of shared learning and collaboration.

Networks
- Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Evidence and Evaluation Group – an informal network of colleagues in evidence and evaluation roles across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care System email bnssg.research@nhs.net for information.
- Research Engagement Network (REN) has been set up to improve the inclusion of under-served, racially-minoritised communities in research. It is led by led by Caafi Health and Nilaari, and supported by People in Health West of England.
- Patient and Public Engagement Group (PenPEG) a group of patients, service users and carers who volunteer their time to ensure research is relevant to the needs of the community. PenPEG is supported by NIHR ARC West Patient and Public Involvement & Engagement (PPIE) Team.
- South West Online Evaluation Network – a free virtual group for those interested in health and care evaluation.

Future NHS
- Future NHS is a collaboration platform hosted by NHS England that supports commissioners, providers, senior management, front line staff, clinicians, health and social care colleagues, charity, voluntary and community sector organisations, and other interested stakeholders to connect, share and learn.

Knowledge and library services
- NHS Knowledge and Library Hub – connects healthcare staff and learners to high quality, NHS-funded, knowledge and evidence resources in one place, using a single search. Access the hub using NHS Open Athens – an account which unlocks a range of quality, trusted, evidence-based information for health and care staff. Accounts are available to more members of the wider health and care community than you might think.
- UKHSA evidence reviews – GOV.UK – evidence reviews conducted by the national Clinical and Public Health Response Evidence Review team and the Science Evidence Review team within UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
- Ask a librarian, the Kings Fund – the Kings Fund offer a free ‘ask a librarian’ service as well as a paid-for literature search service.
- Strategy Unit – provides rapid evidence scans.

Networks
- AnalystX Applied Evaluation Community of Practice – national community of people working on applied evaluation across health and social care.
- Health Innovation Networks – there are the 15 health innovation networks across England, including our local one Health Innovation West of England.
- Midlands Decision Support Network (run by The Strategy Unit) – comprises 12 integrated intelligence functions across the Midlands region supporting Integrated Care Systems decision making.
- NIHR School for Primary Care Research a partnership between nine leading academic centres for primary care research in England.
- Society for Academic Primary Care provide a voice for and champion expertise in Academic Primary Care.
- UK Evaluation Society – membership of evaluation professionals, practitioners and commissioners from national and local government, the research community, consultancies and the voluntary sector.
