Introduction to Trauma-Informed Practice E-Learning Module

The Introduction to Trauma-Informed Practice training has been co-designed and co-produced by people with lived experience and staff from within organisations across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire as a resource to increase understanding and knowledge of trauma and adversity, how trauma may affect us, what it means to be trauma-informed and how this applies in practice.

As you do this training, some of this may resonate with you and you may find it difficult to read, watch or hear some of the content. Please do be mindful of your own responses and needs and prioritise your own self-care and wellbeing, accessing support where needed.

Racial trauma

The NHS Race and Health Observatory commissioned the Centre for Mental Health and Coffee Afrik CIC to carry out a qualitative research project on trauma-informed care in racialised communities.
The project’s key findings are that:

  • Trauma is common in racialised communities and rooted in racism
  • Public services often make trauma worse instead of helping
  • Trauma‑informed care is inconsistently applied and not usually anti‑racist
  • Community-led care is vital but underfunded.

Read the Trauma-informed care and racialised communities report on the Centre for Mental Health website. The site also includes guidance for practitioners, policymakers and public services.
