Innovate Healthier Together Development Training participant feedback
An update from the Innovate Healthier Together Programme.
The Innovate Healthier Together Development training was developed by the West of England Academy in partnership with members of the ICBs Transformation Team. They undertook a skills-gap analysis considering what tools and techniques would support the development of innovation mindsets. The course content was collaboratively refined, and the following Innovate Healthier Together Development Training modules are now accredited:
- Facilitation
- Design thinking
- QI training
We asked Daniel Knight, Design Lead at Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire ICB, a few questions about his experience of the programme.
Tell us your three top take-aways from this training:
Facilitation techniques – I now feel more confident to facilitate larger groups and have successfully held a discovery conference with 85 delegates across all sectors within our system. The programme supported me to identify the right facilitation tools and techniques to successfully achieve the desired outcomes.
Adaptability of techniques – There are so many design thinking techniques that can be applied to the work we do however not all of these are suitable for the cohort of people you are working with. Although I like to use the lotus blossom, I used this with a group of service users with learning disabilities and they found this technique hard to work with. I was able to adapt this and change the technique for future workshops.
Language – We use the term innovation a lot in what we do but it is not always clear what this means. I found the definition we used from the programme is really simple to understand and I have used this when working with services to ensure there is a consistent approach and understanding of terminology.
How have you applied this learning to your work?
The programme has helped me with structuring my planning, understanding peoples’ roles and how I need to be flexible in my approach to working with people across the system and using the 5Ps framework to ensure we are delivering better health and care outcomes for our population. I have also learned that we need to support facilitators and have developed packs and briefings for those supporting with delivery.
What would you tell future delegates about the programme?
Be prepared to fully engage with the content, give perspective and explore different ways of thinking.
We have received great feedback from delegates about how the day was ran and how we built energy and passion into the room, through a robust planning approach which also gave me additional confidence on the day that we had structured the day in the best way.
